Coming by tube or overground

Coming by tube or overground

The nearest underground stations are Camden Town (0.3 miles) and Chalk Farm (0.5 miles). The nearest Overground station is Camden Road (0.3 miles). Camden Road has step-free access between platforms and street level. The nearest underground station with step-free access from platform to street is King's Cross St Pancras (1.3 miles).

This is our recommended walking / wheelchair / mobility scooter route from Camden Town:

The route (along Camden High Street and then Castlehaven Road) has a slight upward slope, with a more pronounced slope as it crosses the canal. The pavements are fairly even and wide, though there are some obstacles such as rubbish bins and shop signs, and the street can get quite crowded. All road crossings have dropped kerbs or road surfaces raised to pavement level. The route takes about six minutes at an average walking speed. Note that although the exit from Camden Town station is level, the entrance (which on Kentish Town Road) has four steps.

This is our recommended walking / wheelchair / mobility scooter route from Camden Road:

This route, along Bonny Street, Camden Street, and Hawley Road, takes about seven minutes at average walking speed. Bonny Street has a moderate downward slope while Camden Street and Hawley Road are fairly level. All road crossings on this route are level or have dropped kerbs. Some of the pavements are a little uneven. Note that we recommend the eastern pavement of Camden Street because the other side has an undropped kerb at one point, and we recommend the southern pavement of Hawley Road because the northern side is very narrow at one point and has a tricky crossing at another point.

This is our recommended walking / wheelchair / mobility scooter route from Chalk Farm:

This route goes a short distance along Adelaide Road and then down Haverstock Hill / Chalk Farm Road before turning along Castlehaven Road. It takes about ten minutes at average walking speed. All road crossings are level or have dropped kerbs. The route slopes gently downward. Pavements are mostly wide but a little uneven in places and have occasional obstacles like shop signs or cafe tables.

Coming by bus

Coming by bus

Bus routes 24, 27, 31, 88, 134, 168, 214 stop near Castlehaven. This map shows the closest bus stops and (in pink) suggested routes from the stops to Castlehaven:

The closest bus stop for south-bound / east-bound routes 24, 27, 31, and 168 is Hawley Road (towards Mornington Crescent), marked as M on the map.

The closest bus stop for north-bound / west-bound routes 24, 27, 31, and 168 is Hartland Road / Camden Market (towards Swiss Cottage or Hampstead Heath), marked as CQ on the map.

The closest bus stop for north-bound routes 88, 134, and 214 is Hawley Road (towards Kentish Town), marked as A on the map.

The closest bus stop for south-bound routes 88, 134, and 214 is Camden Gardens (towards Kings Cross, Warren Street or Oxford Circus), marked as D on the map. (The 24, 27, 31, and 168 also stop here but stop M is closer to Castlehaven.)

All these stops are within four minutes at an average walking speed. The pavements from all stops are reasonably even and road crossings are level or have dropped kerbs. Built-in bus ramps should have no problem reaching the pavement at any of the stops.

Finding the entrance

Finding the entrance

The door of Castlehaven Community Centre opens onto a pedestrian area north of the building, near the junction of Castlehaven Road and Hawley Road.

The pink arrows on the photographs below point to the door.

This is an aerial view:

If you're coming along Hawley Road (e.g. from Camden Road station or from bus stop M, A, or D), you come to the junction with Castlehaven Road. There's a two-part pedestrian crossing taking you to the pedestrian area where the door is. The view if you're coming this way is shown in this photograph:

If you're coming north-east along Castlehaven Road (e.g. from Camden Town or Chalk Farm stations or bus stop CQ) you pass under the railway bridge and the building is on your left. You need to go round the curved corner of the building into the pedestrian area where the door is. The photograph below shows this view (with the door out of sight around the corner):

Getting into the building

Getting into the building

You'll find the door of the building locked and the lobby area beyond it may also be dark, but don't worry, this doesn't mean you can't come in.

You'll need to find the keypad / buzzer panel on the wall to the left of the door. Press the button at the bottom that has a picture of a bell. This rings an electronic buzzer inside the building.

Unfortunately the buzzer rings in a room that's locked up when Outside In takes place and is some distance from the main spaces we use, so it can be difficult for us to hear it sounding. You may need to wait a while until the electronic buzzer stops sounding and a metal bell clangs loudly, which we will definitely hear (and so will you, probably). Please don't keep pressing the button! This doesn't make the buzzer any louder and it doesn't make the metal bell ring any quicker.

Alternatively, if you need to come in urgently, you can knock on the window to the right of the door. This is the window of the kitchen space where our activities usually take place so there will almost always be someone inside. We would prefer that you use the buzzer unless you need to come in urgently, because knocking on the window can alarm people who are in the kitchen.

Parking (cars & cycles)

Parking (cars & cycles)

Much of the parking space around Castlehaven is restricted to resident permit-holders (zone CA-F) between 08:30 and 23:00. This includes bays on Leybourne Street, Hawley Street, Hawley Road, Hartland Road, and Clarence Way. If you contact us in advance we may be able to arrange a permit but this may not be possible. Blue badge holders can park in these spaces without a permit.

Castlehaven Road, Hartland Road, and Chalk Farm Road have some spaces that are pay-to-park between 08:30 and 18:30 (maximum two hours) and unrestricted outside those times. Payment is by phone or 'Ringo' mobile app. Blue badge holders can park in these spaces without paying and without any time-limit.

There are blue badge disabled parking spaces on Leybourne Street, Hartland Road, and Hawley Road.

There are some bicycle stands in the pedestrian area outside Castlehaven where you can lock up bicycles.

There's a set of Santander bicycle docks near the junction of Castlehaven Road and Leybourne Street. Dockless hire bicycles can also sometimes be found in the area.
