Accessibility information

OUTSIDE IN happens at Castlehaven Community Centre, a two-storey building close to several bus stops, underground stations, and main roads. The 'getting here' page gives more details about how to travel to the building and how to get inside once you arrive.

On this page is information about:

Doors

Doors

The front door is 78.5 cm / 30 in wide. There are no steps or slopes to get through the front door.

All doors inside the building are at least the same width as the front door and there are no steps or slopes to go through them.

Neither the front door nor any of the internal doors are power-assisted but there will be people who can open them for you.

Toilets

Toilets

All toilets are on the ground floor. There are three toilets. Each one is a separate room containing the toilet itself, a wash-basin, a hand-drier, and a sanitary bin.

One of the toilets is wheelchair-accessible.

None of the toilets are gendered.

The two non-accessible toilets have automatic air freshener sprays.

Stairs, slopes, lift

Stairs, slopes, lift

There are no steps or slopes throughout the ground floor space that we use. This includes the kitchen hang-out area where the drinks and snacks are and where most activities happen.

Sometimes activities also happen on the first floor. The first floor can be reached by stairs or a lift. The stairs have nine steps to a landing and then another nine steps to the top.

There are no steps or slopes on the first floor.

Sounds and smells

Sounds and smells

We normally play music quietly in the kitchen hang-out area where the drinks and snacks are and where most activities happen.

The kitchen area has bare floors and walls so it can echo a bit when there are many people talking. The first floor studio space, where some activities happen, is large and bare and can get very loud when there are many people talking. We are working on finding ways to soften / absorb these sounds.

When someone presses the entry buzzer by the front door, there's a fairly quiet electronic beeping inside the building. This continues for some time and then a metal bell in the corridor outside the kitchen clangs once, quite loudly.

The two non-accessible toilets have automatic air freshener sprays.

Quiet spaces and ear defenders

Quiet spaces and ear defenders

There's always at least one room available with no activity where you can go if you want a quiet environment. This will normally be a meeting room on the first floor and / or the changing room on the ground floor. There are still sometimes sources of background noise in these spaces.

We also have ear defenders available to use. These can be used in the quiet spaces to further decrease noise, or they can be used in the social / activity spaces if you want to take part in activities and / or be in other people's company but minimize noise and chatter.

Privacy

Privacy

The front door is on a pedestrian area away from main roads and there are usually not many people around. There are no large or obvious indications on the outside of the building that it's a LGBTIQ+ space.

There are large windows in the kitchen hang-out area, the first floor studio space, and the first floor meeting room that serves as a quiet space. These windows currently have no blinds so it is possible for people to see in from outside. We are trying to get blinds installed.

You don't need to provide any identifying information to come to Outside In.

Furniture

Furniture

Most of the furniture in the space consists of folding tables and stackable classroom-type chairs without arms. These can easily be rearranged.

In addition to these, the kitchen area has a fixed island / breakfast bar unit and some tall movable stools for sitting at it. We usually put most of the snacks and drinks here. The unit is about 93cm (3'1") high for most of its length but has a lowered portion about 77cm (2'7") high.

The first floor meeting room (used as a quiet space or for some visiting services) contains a large non-folding conference table but it can be moved to allow access to most parts of the room.

Kitchen appliances

Kitchen applicances

The kitchen has a worktop with two ceramic hobs and a sink. The worktop is about 93cm (3'1") high.

There are three ovens and a microwave. The controls for the lowest oven are about 125cm (4'2") from the floor. The microwave controls are about 156cm (5'2") from the floor.

Boiling water from drinks is from a tap in a unit mounted on the wall above the worktop. The tap is about 140cm (4'7") from the floor and can be awkward to reach.
